Overwatch
Five a side with fixed roles, a roster of 54 heroes and matches that fit between other plans. Overwatch suits groups who like clear jobs: one shields, two shoot, two heal.
Profile
What it asks of a group
- Rules to learnObjectives are simple to read. The work is in 54 heroes, each with its own kit, and in learning the other side's.
- Aim and controlDamage heroes need aim; many tanks and supports win fights with positioning and timing instead.
- Talking loadFights turn on combining ultimates and focusing one target, so the team calls them together.
- Session flexCore matches run about 10 to 20 minutes by our estimate, so an hour holds three or four.
- Team size
- 5v5 Role Queue: 1 tank, 2 damage, 2 support. A 6v6 Open Queue also runs
- Main mode
- Role Queue in Quick Play or Competitive, 10 to 20 minutes by our estimate
- Short option
- Every core match is short. Stadium is 5v5, first to 4 round wins, though new Stadium content stopped in July 2026
- Platforms
- PC (Battle.net, Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2, with cross-play
- Ranked access
- Competitive opens after 20 wins in unranked play. Blizzard support says new PC accounts must link a phone number
- Price model
- Free to play, with every hero free from the start. Money buys the Premium Battle Pass and cosmetics. Loot boxes came back in 2025 and are earned in play; PEGI lists paid random items.
- Released
- 4 October 2022, as Overwatch 2; renamed Overwatch in February 2026
- Age rating
- PEGI 16, re-rated in 2026 for paid random items (previously 12)
First evenings
Where the first hours go
Every hero is unlocked for new players, so the first decision is roles, not purchases. Role Queue fixes the split at one tank, two damage and two support, and each player queues for the role they want to learn. The Practice Range is the place to try a hero's abilities before a real match.
Competitive waits until an account has 20 wins in unranked play, which leaves the first evenings for Quick Play. Perks, upgrades chosen during a match, arrived in February 2025 and add one more decision per hero once the basics settle.
Groups who want short matches and clear jobs, and friends who can split into one tank, two damage and two support without arguing.
Groups of three or four who want to fill a side alone, and anyone on a Mac: there is no macOS version.
